Elimination Communication isn't about potty training essentially. EC focuses upon building critical communication between parent and child upon the requirement of eliminating waste from the body. EC attempts to reduce the use of diapers/ nappies yet is not a rigid training programme like 'potty training' may appear to be. EC uses cues and intuition to build the bond between parent and child in regards to communicating basic requirements (e.g. the rid of waste from the body).

EC is easier to attempt with children that wear cloth reusable nappies. However, it is still possible to attempt with disposable diapered infants. Children that use cloth nappies are more aware of themselves in terms of toilet time, although cloth nappies still takes the liquid to the outer regions of the nappy, keeping the core of the nappy itself dry against the skin, cloth nappies do not do this as quickly as chemical based disposable nappies. Worry not! Nappy rash is actually less of a problem when using cloth as the chemicals within disposable nappies cause the skin to become dry and irritated.
As potty training tends to start later in your infants life (from one year old onwards) EC is possible from an earlier age. Remember it is not about training, it is about communication thus accidents are expected, do not be disheartened! If you are to choose a potty for use during the EC stage then it is advisable to get a high backed potty as younger children are unable to support themselves easily, thus a high backed potty seat is more comfortable. Parents should still hold and support their child whilst they are seated on the potty, children should never be left unattended or supported.

Joshua is currently seven months old, he wears combination Bamboo cloth nappies and soft waterproof covers. We discovered that Joshua tended to try to eliminate waste from his body when he was either in his high chair, Bumbo seat or on his bouncer. This signified to us that Joshua was more comfortable going to the toilet when in a seated position similar to using a potty. We followed Joshua's preferences and purchased a high backed potty in order to offer him the opportunity to eliminate his waste whilst on the potty.
At this early stage we don't necessarily expect EC to be successful. However, we are open minded parents who are willing to give anything a try if it benefits our son, thus will be giving EC and Joshua the time, the chance and the opportunity.
